Support Woolgrowers Transition Away from Mulesing

Join us in leading the transformation of flystrike management to support a more resilient wool industry.

What is the problem?

Increasing numbers of woolgrowers are looking to reduce their reliance on mulesing as the main tool to reduce the risk of flystrike. An array of variables contributes to the risk and consequences of flystrike, making transitioning to a non-mulesed enterprise a complex process that requires time, support, careful planning and execution.

What is the project’s solution?

You can directly support woolgrowers that are looking to reduce their reliance on mulesing by unlocking the tangible outcomes of 15 years of flystrike research and development. An education program and framework will support thriving flocks, delivering actionable change and providing on-ground support to woolgrowers looking for viable pathways to cease mulesing.

What is the investment ask?

A minimum contribution of AU$30,000 will directly fund the framework across three years.

You will be actively contributing to solving systemic issues in the industry, enhancing your recognition and reputation as a thought leader and innovator, with your contribution actively promoted through Woolmark and wider industry communications.

What is the Project Plan?

The framework allows investors to support the wool industry, assisting woolgrowers to transition away from mulesing. Four key components make up the framework:

Training: Attendance of established flystrike management workshops including SimpliFly, ClassiFly and StrateFly to improve knowledge of flystrike management approaches.

Planning: Development and implementation of a Transition to a Non-Mulesed Plan including a Breeding and Flystrike management plan, to move away from reliance on mulesing.

Action: Benchmarking of their flock to inform sheep selection, classing and joining strategies that reduce the risk of not mulesing.

Monitoring: Assessment and progress reporting to ensure an effective and safe transition away from mulesing.

What is your expected participation?

Partners are invited to engage with the project through several avenues, including:

  • Project Advisory Group Membership – Participate in strategic discussions and receive regular updates from the research team.
  • Public Relations and Communications – Benefit from PR opportunities throughout the project and access to professionally developed communication materials.
  • Access to Project Members – Collaborate directly with participating researchers and woolgrowers for project video production and content development opportunities.

Who are the delivery partners?

Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Flystrike Extension Program will support brands, advisors and woolgrowers by providing:

  • Program and contract management including AmpliFlyTM Advisors coordination
  • Woolgrower recruitment and engagement for participation
  • Liaison between all stakeholders involved

AmpliFlyTM Advisors will support participant woolgrowers to:

  • Develop and implement a 3-year Transition to Non-Mulesed Plan including breeding objectives and best management practices
  • Benchmark and monitor progress of sheep relevant characteristics for a flystrike low-risk flock
  • Objective annual reporting and improvement opportunities
